With over 40 years of experience in spinning and weaving, Karen Boyer is a seasoned artisan with a passion for transforming raw fleece into exquisite finished projects. As a self-taught enthusiast who has also honed her skills through numerous workshops, Karen specializes in carding luxurious blends of alpaca, silk, mohair, and wool. She is an active member of both the Pinecone Treadlers Spinning & Weaving Guild of South Muskoka and the Huronia Spinners Guild.
Workshop Description:
In this hands on workshop, participants will delve into the art of handspinning through a combination of presentations, live demonstrations, and hands-on experiences. Karen will guide you through each step of the process, from understanding the different types of fibers and their unique characteristics to mastering the techniques of fiber preparation, spinning, plying, and wet finishing.
Throughout the workshop, you'll explore:
Types of fibre, their source and characteristics
Fibre preparation from washing to teasing to handcarding to handcombing to drum carding
Types of spinning wheels and spindles
Drafting and putting twist in fibre with a spindle and a wheel
Singles and plied yarn
Wet finishing
Using Handspun yarn
